History

Very well known is the Landhouse of Zeelandia, a beautifully situated colonial landhouse, build during the second half of the 18th century.
Originally a second home for the richer population of Curacao to spend the week-ends there.
It was not a plantation house like most of the landhouses originally were.
At this moment the landhouse is managed by a foundation and have converted the side buildings into beautiful retirement apartments for the seniors.

The second meaning, the original industrial area of Willemstad, is presently growing into a “Shopping Area”
Within this area, originally a foreland partially surrounded by water that even had the possibility to land a seaplane on a small island, has expanded enormously and is still expanding.

In the forties and the years after that, filling of the inlet and shaving off a small hill in the middle of the peninsula converted the peninsula into an industrial area.
A wholesaler and other industries were among the first settlers on Zeelandia.
The favorable location procured that other businesses started to open their doors but now also for the consumer.
Albert Heijn, Kooijman and other businesses are attracting a lot of consumers to Zeelandia, a positive development.
